Third Grade ART

Developmentally students in third grade are transitioning form Schematic to Dawning Realism. Kids at this age need to be praised for their creativity and spontaneity while continuing to grow into a more realistic approach to art.

Day of the dead 
Third graders looked at day of the dead sugar skulls to inspire their symmetrical  line design masks. We used color rhythm while filling in the mask.

Trees in Space.
Students looked at Vincent Van Gogh's  The Street Menders to discover three methods for creating space on a two dimensional plane. Students discovered that they could make their landscapes go back in space through overlapping, placement and scale, the same methods that Van Gogh used!  We are already like the masters!!!!

Printmaking Seascapes
Students used their knowledge of creating a landscape and applied it to create a seascape.  While creating our marker prints students learned that creating a print gives you the ability to create multiples.

Clay Snowmen
Students used clay spheres cones and cubes to create a snowman.

Positive and Negative Space Collage. 
After looking at Jasper Johns Picasso and cups students created their own optical illusion art by playing with positive and negative space.

Expressive portrait collage. 
Students created some amazingly expressive faces out of cut paper,yarn and recyclable materials. 

African Landscapes.
Students created a silhouette of an African landscape and used either cool or warm colors along with texture to paint a crayon resist.

John Bigger 3D forms
Students created the illusion of 3D forms and added value to create depth. Students choose a light source and added a highlight and shadow based on that light source.
