First Grade ART

First graders continue to explore a variety of mediums while increasing fine motor skills.

Kandinsky Non-Representational Line Design.
The first graders started the year by listening to many different types of instrumental music (including Flight of the Bumble Bee, the Mario Brother theme song, and many others) to identify the different line types that music possesses. We looked at art by Wassily Kandinsky and described what we saw.

Using the seasons for inspirations, students created a autumnal crayon resist mono-print  We used oil pastels, watercolors, and last tempera to show the printed reflection of the leaves in the water.

While students are studying nocturnal animals in science and geometric shapes in math,  we decided to continue their knowledge of both into their art studies. We are working on a symmetrically stamped shape pattern  papers that we will later turn into the shape of a nocturnal animal.

Organic shape monsters
Students are drawing an organic shape monster inspired by Maurice Sendak. They used two primary colors to mix a secondary color and fill in their monster with paint  Students named their monsters and gave them a place to live.

Using their knowledge of geometric and organic shapes students created a symmetrical mask!

Mondrian in Secondary Colors
Students mixed the three secondaries colors and added texture to the paper. Later we looked at the work of  Mondrian and create our own abstract collage cityscape.
Tacky the Penguin
While studying Penguins we decided to collage our own tacky penguins. We first used our knowledge of the color wheel to create a sunrise. Later we used lots of different materials with a variety of textures to make our penguins tacky.

Pop Art Cows.
Using Andy Warhol's Cow Wallpaper for inspiration students created their own colorful pop art cows.

Georgia O'Keeffe Flowers.
Students did an observational flower drawing and then used sharpie, color pencil and watercolors in cool or warm color families.
